FAQ – Yes, You Are Barefoot

We are often asked what new students should expect in their first yoga class. It’s hard to experience the relaxing and rejuvenating benefits of yoga when doubt and insecurity take over. Here are a few tips to guide you to and through your first class:

  1. “What do I wear?”
Wear comfortable clothing that allows for movement. You may want to dress in layers, depending on the temperature of the room and the type of class you’re attending. And yes, you are barefoot.

  2. “What should I bring?”
Bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated before, during, and after class. If you have a yoga mat, bring it along! Don’t worry if you don’t—Studio 9-to-5 provides mats to individuals and organizations in need. You may also want to bring a towel.

  3. “Why is it so quiet in here?”
The yoga room is often silent before and after class. Honor this silence—it might be your only chance, or your neighbor’s, to enjoy a few moments without noise.

  4. “What’s with the funny breathing?”
You’ll encounter a variety of breathing techniques in class. These techniques serve different purposes, from energizing and warming up your body to cooling down and relaxing. All of them help you become aware of your breath and its effects on your body.

  5. “I’m not flexible, so I can’t do yoga.”
Yes, you can! Yoga helps you gain flexibility and strength. You don’t need to do the splits—the super-bendy person next to you might struggle with strength-building postures. We all come from different places, with different bodies, and each of us has something to work on—whether physical or mental. Shifting your focus from comparison to what you can do will help you both on and off the mat.

Often, the hardest part of a yoga class is simply showing up.
